In ceramics, wollastonite decreases shrinkage and gas evolution during firing, increases green and fired strength, maintains brightness during firing, permits fast firing, and reduces crazing, cracking, and glaze defects.

The major applications exploit its refractory nature and resistance to corrosion by alkali materials. Two end-uses are for enamels, and ceramic glazes. In enamels and glazes it serves as an opacifier. It can be also present in some cements.

Rutile forms an important constituent of heavy minerals and ore deposits. Miner’s extract and separate the valuable minerals?–?e.g., rutile,?zircon, and ilmenite. The main uses for rutile are the manufacture of refractory ceramic, as a pigment, and to produce titanium metal.

The principal industrial application of ceria is for polishing, especially chemical-mechanical planarization?(CMP). For this purpose, it has displaced many other oxides that were previously used, such as iron oxide and zirconia.

La 2 O 3 forms glasses of high density, refractive index, and hardness. Together with oxides of tungsten,?tantalum, and thorium,?La 2 O 3 improves the resistance of the glass to attack by alkali.La 2 O 3 is an ingredient in some piezoelectric and thermoelectric materials.
